Other than the Goddess of Mercy Stone which attracted people to pray at the quarry on the island, there is this German Girl Shrine where people go to pray too. I din managed to visit the shrine the last time I was there. So this time round I’ve decided to visit it.
German Girl Shrine on Pulau Ubin and all the newspaper clippings that is stuck on its walls.

Shrine entrance

People had been coming here to pray with offerings of bottled perfumed water and powder.

On a closer look at the alter, there seems to be an urn behind the doll figurine. Somehow my hair seems to stand just looking at it.

I heard from my grandmother that when a person dies, he/she would turn into praying mantis and come back to visit the places he/she had been to when alive. I found this praying mantis in the shrine.

So do pay a visit to this shrine the next time you make a trip to Pulau Ubin
Interesting. Didn’t know there is such a place.
Yup. You might wanna visit this shrine on your next trip to Pulau Ubin.
Who’s this German girl? I can’t read the words on the newspaper cuttings.
It is said in the folklore that the girl was the daughter of a coffee plantation manager who lived near the present site of the shrine in the early 20th century. At the end of WWI, British soldiers rushed in to intern her parents but she was said to have escaped through a back door. In her haste, she fell into the quarry behind the coffee complex which lead to her death.
oic… poor thing.
they are civilians, right? Guess in war, they don’t care.
