Awon Korean Restaurant (BBQ & Steamboat Buffet)

Edited on 2 Nov 2008

Read from someone’s posting in a forum that this restaurant had ceased operations with effect from 1 Nov 2008

—————————————————————————————————————————————

ED brought me to this korean bbq & steamboat restaurant at Excelsior hotel for our Vday dinner last Wed. Initially I tot we are eating those sort of stuff offered by Seoul Garden but ED assured me that this is different. I told him I dun wanna smell like I had been cooking in the kitchen after the end of the meal. He smiled and told me I would not. And true enough I din smell of food fumes after the meal and I totally enjoyed the dinner.

After looking through the menu, we decided to have the BBQ and Steamboat buffet.

The owner of the restaurant is a korean lady that is conversant in English. She came with a tray laid with appetister dishes. The buffet includes 6 appetitiser dishes. As I don’t eat kimchi and the preserved radish slices, I asked for them to be remove and kept the other 4 appetitiser dishes on our table. The meal comes with free flow of water.

The waiter came with the steamboat laid full of meat slices and assorted vegetables

Took a look at the buffet table.

Here’s the appetitisers

Lots of veg and mushrooms. My fav :)

Noodles and fishball.. anyone?? I found the fishcake and fishballs too bland for my liking. Did not go for second round after that.

Prawns and Pork Slices

Chicken and Beef Slices

All the meat slices are thinly cut and very well marinated. I only tried the pork and chicken slices as I don’t take beef. The pork and chicken were so tender and succulent. And they goes well with soju. Yah I tried soju for the 1st time in my life. The owner recommended the lemon soju to us. It’s really nice.

We were surprised when the soju came in a teapot. I lifted the lid of the pot and peered inside. There were freshly cut lemon slices floating in the soju inside the teapot. ED said the soju tasted like volka lemon :)

We couldn’t finish all the soju and asked if we could pack the remainder back home. The friendly waitress gladly obliged and poured the remainder soju into a bottle.

So how much did the whole meal cost. With 30% discount for UOB card holders for the buffet dinner only, the dinner cost approx $67. If we hadn’t order the soju the cost would had been lower.

Here’s the address of this restaurant

I went there last month with a group of friends, but unfortunately, other than my bf and I, the rest of them didn’t like it very much. They felt it was too expensive and there were very little choices of food to cook. :(

    I like the marinate. :)

Oh, and I didn’t know they had drinks! Else we would have ordered other stuff (she doesn’t drink plain water).

actually I find the selection ok and the price quite alright too if you compare this to other Korean restaurants. But cannot compare to those type of buffet that we are used to in Singapore. Perhaps that’s why your friends might find the selection of buffet food too little. For me, I just went for the meat as I liked them very much. :)

Jaime-La-Nourriture: Tks :) hope you’ll like tat place. I fell in love with it after my visit there. It’s is relatively cheaper than other korean restaurants that I had been there. The centre portion of the steamboat is actually a metal place for u to bbq ur meat… the funny thing is u dun need to add oil to cook it…. and the meat dun get stuck to the metal plate at all… amazing.. and it’s so nice and tender after the meat is cooked…. goes really well with the soju… yummy :)

oh so the middle part is actually the bbq plate, so cool!

  9. February 22, 2008 at 5:10 pm

ya… it is convex in shape as in the centre portion is like a hill…. u just place ur meat on top to cook… and it’s not greasy or smelly while it cooks.. unlike those typical bbq hotplate that sizzle alot and u need to put alot of oil to prevent ur food from sticking onto the plate. This one u gotta put lotsa water to prevent it from sticking to the plate.. interesting rite.. water instead of oil :)

ya it’s delicious korean bbq but too bad this restaurant had ceased operations since last year. so sad…. one place less to go for nice korean food. But if you like korean food you can also try O Dae Yang @ Tanjong Pagar.

yes yes I really missed the nice bbq meat that Awon served…. very very sad that it closed down and now I can’t find another nice and reasonably priced Korean BBq restaurant.

I only tried the set lunches at O Dae Yang but not their Korean BBQ so cannot comment is theirs are nicer. But I love their set lunches… delicous and reasonably priced. You can give it a try though.
