Remember when I was very young, my late grandmother would bring me to watch Chinese Wayang (or Chinese Opera) at the streets. She would dragged a chair and placed it just in front of the stage with me seated on her lap watching the Wayang together. I would on and off asked her what are the actors and actressess singing about and she would patiently explain them to me.

Chinese Street Opera was very popular in the 1960s – 1970s. It is usually staged to celebrate some God’s or Goddess birthday or to celebrate major chinese festivals like the Lunar 7th Month. Nowadays, it is quite rare to see Chinese Street Opera in Singapore as youngsters do not really appreciate or understand such Art.

I happen to chanced upon this Chinese Street Opera which was put up by Kampong Glam Community Club to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Watching it bring back many memories of yester-years. Esp memories of listening to my grandmother translating the Chinese Opera to me. Very heart-warming feeling.
