My second time at Astons and … …

… I am so unfortunate to be always down with diarrhea after having my dinner there. I only ate twice at Astons and at different outlets. The most recent one was at the Centrepoint outlet. We had a department dinner gathering there.

All of us had the set dinner which comprised of the salad, soup, a main and lastly the dessert.

Here’s the Casear Salad. It’s pretty refreshing and I loved the bread bits

food 01

This is the horrible googy soup. It had too much starch that I think if u throw it to the wall it would get stuck there. A colleague did not drank hers. On hindsight I think it’s so clever of her not to cos a few of us who drank this googy stuff came down with diarrhea the next day. I started running to the loo that very night.

Here’s the googy Cream of Mushroom

food 02

3 types of mains to choose from.

Colleague A had this chicken set that comes with apple sausage.

food 03

Steak with baked potato.

food 04

I had this… the fish set that comes with potato wedges. The wedges were nice. So was the fish.

food 05

The dessert.. Vanilla ice-cream. It was nice but I was too full to finish it.

food 06

The food was not bad (except for that horrible googy soup). But I don’t think I would be patronising Astons anytime soon. Had this phobia of coming down with diarrhea after having my dinner there. Sigh :(

Wood Restaurant @ Vivocity

It’s ED’s birthday and I decided to give him a lunch treat @ Wood Restaurant at Vivocity. Food and ambience was pretty good.

Here’s the menu for the set lunch

We ordered a bottle of sparkling mineral water as they do not really give you water FOC.
Sparkling Mineral Water cost $8++. A bottle can fill approx 4 glasses. Tasted pretty refreshing :)

I had the Wood Roasted Asparagus Soup. While ED had the House smoke salmon, buffalo mozarella with lemon dressing.
The soup tasted great. It’s creamy but not overpowering.

Pita bread tasted really great even on its own. Dipped it with some olive oil to enhance the flavour of the herbs in the bread. It complements the soup very well too. I had 2 servings of it

For Main course, I had the Sea Bass and Ed ordered the Steak.
I find the sea bass was a bit fishy. It comes with Jap rice wrapped with boiled cabbage and cut into 2. Looks like sushi to me. but the rice tasted really nice. I expected it to be bland but it’s not. Slightly salty and the juiciness of the cabbage complements the rice realy well.
ED had the steak with roasted mushrooms and asparagus. He dun really eat mushroom and this is the first time I see him eat it. He said they mushrooms are so nicely roasted that he can stomach the mushroom taste (for once )

There’s a mixture of shitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, straw mushrooms and button mushrooms. All nicely roasted. The steak was very very tender too (from ED feedback cos i dun take beef)

Decor of the restaurant. Looks very nice and cosy. We were sitting on very very nice and comfy sofas. As you dine, you can hear very nice Bossa Nova music being played.

So wat’s the total cost for the lunch?
2 set lunches @ $35++/pax = $70++
1 glass of white wine = $14++
1 bottle of sparkling mineral water = $8++ (UOB card discount for this item)
Total = $104 (approx). Discount for UOB card members is only applicable for items ordered from the ala carte menu.
The ambience is really nice. The couch is so cosy too. I think it would be even more romantic at night when the place is dark and lit by candles. The food is not cheap but it’s good and you are paying for quality and ambience. Can splurge and give your special someone a treat there once in a while for special occasions. ;)

THE TOUCAN Irish Pub @ Duxton

Initially planned to walk to Majestic Hotel with Hyacinthus to try out their famous mango pudding. However, on our way there, we stumbled upon this nice little Irish pub in Duxton area.

Actually it’s the little garden that caught our attention before we realised there’s an Irish pub beside it.

There’s even a wishing well in the garden! :)

Lots of pretty flowers blooming in the garden. But some are wiltering

What’s the name of this Irish Pub?? It’s The Toucan Irish Pub

Hyacinthus and I decided to have lunch here instead.

The interior of the pub looks really nice, warm and cosy. The place looks kinda new too.

The waitress showed us to a table for 2. But we found that the air con vent is directly blowing really strong cold air at it. We wanted move to the long table beside it but was told it was reserved by a big group of diners.

So we decided to have our lunch at the high table and chairs beside it. Hya and I were trying our best to stay seated on the high chair as we tend to slip down if we are not careful :)

Mmmm what’s good to order for lunch??

We decided to try their Super Lunch Set which includes soup (free flow) and a plate of fish & chips. The Super Set lunch is only $6.50++ which we found really reasonable. Hya ordered a glass of coke while I opted for a glass of diet coke. Soft drinks are an additional $2++ and the promotional prices are only available if you order their Super Lunch Set.

We placed our order at 12.50pm and waited for about half an hour before lunch was served.

Our drinks came after 5 mins upon ordering. Hya lamented on why there were no lemon slices for her glass of coke while my diet coke has a wedge of lemon in it.

After another 10 mins of waiting and enquiring, soup is finally served. But only 1 bowl was served.

On enquiry, the waitress told us they ran out of soup bowls. We asked the owner why he did not purchase more soup bowls. He replied that he had more than 30 soup bowls but his staff broke about 20 of them yesterday and thus thus the shortage. He asked if Hya mind if soup is served in a bigger bowl. Hya said she is find with it.

See the difference in bowl sizes :)

The tomato soup tasted really nice. Tasted buttery and a little savoury with a tinge of sourness from the tomato. Very nice and appetizing. Mashed potatoes were also added to the soup to thicken it instead of added more milk and cream to it. I find this more refreshing as it doesn’t taste so heavy compared to creamy soups.

Still waiting for our fish and chips to arrive… mmm mmm mmm

Took some pics of the decorations in the pub. The decor in the pub looks quite new. The owner told us that the pub was opened in Oct 2007. So this is a 5 months old pub :)

At last, our fish & chips are served. Mine came first while Hya’s one came 5 mins later.

The fish batter is thinner compared to the usual fish & chips that we normally had. Also the batter tasted of a tinge of beer taste. The fries were really crispy too.

So what’s the total damage. It’s only $19.90 in total. Quite reasonable.

Lunch at Nexus Gourmet

Had lunch with my colleagues at this little cafe called Nexus Gourmet along Telor Ayer Street. The food is quite nice and the menu changes daily. I had the Baked Garoupa, French Onion Chicken Soup and Ice Lemon Tea for only $11 nett. Though the serving looks small, it is pretty filling. Loved the mashed potatoes very much. It’s very well mashed up and tasted smooth with no lumps at all. Do not taste powdery too. Simply Yummy. Hope they have mash potato on the main menu too.
